Where this falls down
- HD pixels are not HD detail.A thumbnail converted to 1080p has 1080p dimensions and thumbnail detail. The model path on Enhance can propose texture; it is invented, and labelled so.
- A box is not filled.A 4:3 picture in a 16:9 box leaves the sides empty. This page never stretches it to fill; padding the box is a later feature.
Questions people ask
- Will my picture be cropped to 16:9?
- No. The picture is fitted inside the HD box in its own shape, so a 4:3 photo comes out 1,440 × 1,080 for Full HD — the full height of the box, narrower than it. Nothing is cut off and nothing is stretched.
- Is a photo converted to HD really HD?
- It has HD pixel dimensions. How many of those pixels were recorded and how many were worked out depends on the size you started from: a 640 × 480 photo brought to 1,440 × 1,080 is 2.25× — about four in five pixels computed. The 1:1 strip shows you what that looks like.
- What if my picture is already bigger than HD?
- The bench says so and offers to keep it as it is. Making a larger picture smaller is not what this page is for, and it will not pretend otherwise.
- Where does the Instagram number come from?
- Instagram's Help Centre says square posts are kept at up to 1,080 × 1,080 pixels (checked 18 October 2026). Enlarging past that buys nothing, because Instagram re-sizes it on upload.
